In honor of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), Xbox shared a blog post outlining new accessibility features aimed at enhancing the gaming experience for players with disabilities. The post, written by Kaitlyn Jones, Senior Accessibility Product Manager for Xbox’s gaming accessibility group, highlighted the company’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity in gaming.
“International Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed each December, serves to promote awareness, understanding, and the equal participation of individuals with disabilities in all aspects of society and development,” Jones wrote. “At Xbox, we believe that play is a crucial part of today’s world, and it should be accessible to as many people as possible. Our goal is to create inclusive gaming experiences that allow players to enjoy the games they love, in the ways that suit them best, while connecting with the communities they choose.”
The blog post discussed several updates related to Xbox’s peripheral devices, particularly the Xbox Adaptive Controller and the Elite Series 2 controller. One of the key updates is the introduction of new remapping options, which Jones highlighted as a significant accessibility improvement. These remapping features enable players to customize their controls to better suit their physical needs and preferences. Notable additions include the ability to toggle holds and map stick movements to button presses, which are especially helpful for gamers who may struggle with prolonged button presses or lack dexterity.
Additionally, players can now map mouse inputs to the Xbox controller, offering greater flexibility. This feature enables users to, for example, use the Xbox Adaptive Controller to watch a game guide on YouTube during a break, create a PowerPoint presentation, or check emails without needing to switch devices. Another significant update allows the mapping of the hat switch on specific joysticks to function as an “opposite stick” when connected to the Xbox Adaptive Controller.
Jones also touched on the latest accessibility updates in popular games, such as Diablo IV and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, both of which are nominees for the Game Awards’ Innovation in Accessibility category. The award ceremony will take place next week in Los Angeles.
